Israeli company PolyPid has reported new findings on D‑PLEX₁₀₀, an investigational treatment designed to prevent surgical-site infections. The data were announced on October 21, 2026, ahead of a presentation at the IDWeek conference in the United States.
Infections following surgery can complicate recovery and require additional treatment. Developed by the Petah Tikva-based company, D‑PLEX₁₀₀ is applied directly to the surgical site, where it gradually releases the antibiotic doxycycline over 30 days.
What Did the New Analysis Show?
Researchers pooled data from three randomized clinical trials involving 2,185 patients. They examined wound culture results from 134 patients who developed infections despite preventive treatment.
Among these patients, heavy bacterial growth was less frequent with D‑PLEX₁₀₀ plus standard care: 16%, compared with 27% with standard care alone. Infections also developed later, with a median onset of 10 days versus 6.5 days. The proportions of multidrug-resistant organisms were similar between groups.
What Does This Mean for Patients?
The findings help researchers understand the characteristics of infections that develop despite preventive treatment. However, this was an exploratory analysis reported by the developer. It does not establish that there is no risk of antibiotic resistance.
D‑PLEX₁₀₀ remains an investigational product. The announcement does not mean it is available for routine use. Decisions about preventing and treating postoperative infections should be made by the treating physician.
